I manage the site www.oaklandsymphonchorus.org, currently running on DotNetNuke 4.3.5.  I want to upgrade the site (eventually) to 5.x - but my immediate plan is to do a series of intermediate upgrades (based on advice from the DNN forums) to these versions:

4.3.5 -> 4.1.1 -> 4.6.2 -> 4.9.4

Our site uses two Inventua modules:

  • Inventua PayPal module version 3.2.7 build 15

  • Inventua Top Menu module 3.0.4 build 7; shared components 3.0.3 build 10

I expect to "sit" on each version for a least a couple of days, to make sure there are no issues with the upgrade.

Will I need to get newer versions of either of these modules to run on any of the DNN 4.x versions I'll be "passing through"?  Will I need to get a new version of either module when I (eventually) upgrade to 5.x?

Thank you for your support.

You will definitely need new versions for DNN 5. The versions you have should work for the DNN 4.x versions, however you can upgrade it if needed. Sorry I cannot say for sure whether you will need to upgrade the modules as you go through the DNN 4 versions as I do not have a compatibility matrix for all of the DNN 4.x->Inventua modules, as you can imagine there would be many combinations - they mostly work.

You can download the module versions from http://www.inventua.com/dnn-paypal-overview.content & http://www.inventua.com/dnn-topmenu-overview.content

PS: We would normally upgrade through the versions on a test site, then copy the finished upgrade to the live site, rather then putting the intermediate versions on the live site. It's less work that way.

PPS: I assume the 4.3.5->4.1.1 is a typo. The upgrade from DNN 4.1.1 to 4.6.2 is the hard one. We found that you have to delete some files after the upgrade and do some manual web.config changes, otherwise you get weird error messages. Mitchell Sellers has a guide at http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/articletype/articleview/articleid/120/upgrade-to-dotnetnuke-455-from-4x.aspx

Anthony,

Thanks for your responses, and I've already put the Inventua upgrades on my test site.  The upgrade from 4.3.5 to 4.1.1 WAS a typo, should have been 4.3.5 -> 4.4.1 (dyslexia rlues!), and I'm following Mitchel Sellers' road map inch by inch!
